NYT Story About Caregiver's Clever Ways of Keeping Elderly Mother Off Roads
My Solution to the Driving Problem: Vandalism
By IRENE WIELAWSKI
Sneaking into my mother’s garage to disable the engine of her 1997 Honda Accord was not something I ever imagined doing in my role as daughter and caregiver of a parent in failing health.
I was prepared to help with medical appointments, groceries, finances and social and personal needs, and in myriad other ways to walk alongside my mother as she coped with a deteriorating body and a mind weakened by dementia.

May 2011 Employee of the Month: Sharonda Molborough
Sharonda began her career with Guardian Medical Monitoring in April of 2010 and in that short amount of time she has quickly proven to be a tremendous asset to the SIA Department.
Sharonda showed her true potential when she was tasked with scheduling the installation of nearly 1200 PERS units as part of a recent conversion. While we estimated that the conversion would take 6 to 8 weeks, Sharonda blew us away when she virtually completed the job in 4 weeks. This was in addition to her being able to keep up with her regular Ohio scheduling duties!
Sharonda has been able to build a great relationship with our main conversion contact and worked very closely with both companies' technicians to make the conversion run as smoothly as ever. In the one year that Sharonda has been with Guardian, she has proven over and over her dedication, her strong organizational skills and her willingness to step in when needed.
These skills were very valuable in helping her to quickly learn the daily operations of the SIA Department and she has become the go-to person to help cover scheduling for other team members when they are on vacation, as well as the Department expert on linking Tabsafe units. Sharonda is a key part of our team and we look forward to seeing her continued growth within the Department and Guardian as a whole.
Congratulations to Sharonda for a job well done. We are proud to name you Employee of the Month!

By MATT WALTERS
Capital News Service
LANSING - An Ann Arbor woman whose elderly father died after walking away from a community center is among those pushing for a new law that would require law enforcement agencies to issue a public alert when a person 60 or older is reported missing and is believed to be incapable of returning home on his or her own.
Jennie Stinson, of Ann Arbor, has advocated for “Silver Alert” legislation since her father, Norris Lee, died last September.

Medicare could cover tests for soaring STD rate in senior citizens
By BILL TOLAND, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Taxpayers could soon be picking up the tab for new sexually transmitted disease screenings for seniors, as well as other Medicare recipients.
More than a decade after Viagra and its ilk began helping boomers and seniors to enjoy conjugal relations more frequently, sexually transmitted disease rates are up dramatically in the over-40 age bracket.
And while wisdom is supposed to come with age, studies have also shown that men over 50 -- regardless of marital status -- are six times less likely to use a condom than men in their 20s, partly because, by that age, they (and their partner) are less worried about pregnancy.
Add in improved senior health and a higher divorce rate, and the result nearly seems inevitable: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, STD rates are up by almost 50 percent for men over 40 between 1996 and 2008.

Jennifer has learned very quickly what it takes to make our department be successful. She is dependable, upbeat, friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. She is our go to person when we have questions dealing with Sales Force, agency contracts etc. and is our bridge between SIA and the sales reps in the field. She is always willing to learn new things and help with the innovation and streamlining of new ideas to help our department run more efficiently. She's the glue that holds the Medical Monitoring Sales department together, the spirit and spunk that keeps the administrative side of our lives bearable, the "yes" when all else is "no." December 2010 Employee of the Month: Margaret McCormick
Margaret McCormick finished the year strong at 103% of quota over the last quarter. Margaret has worked very hard to get herself very well networked in her territory. Wherever she goes, people either know her or know someone who knows her. Due to all of her networking efforts, people go out of their way to introduce her to others who can help her and the company.
She is diligent in following up on trending information provided to her. She recently took Valley Area Agency on Aging from virtually zero referrals to several referrals a week. She was excited to take over the Beaumont account, even though it would mean more hours, more training, more phone calls and more networking.
You will find Margaret in the office early in the morning or late in the evening doing whatever it takes to get the job done. She is passionate about her job and her clients. Throughout her years with Guardian, she has made many friends, she has fun with what she does for a living and she truly cares about Guardian and her customers. For these reasons, we are proud to nominate her as the December 2010 Maximum Achiever!

Crime Against The Elderly On The Rise
Clarence (Sonny) Jones was known around southwest Detroit for helping others -- from youths without a dad to other senior citizens like himself.
A week ago today, the 86-year-old was getting the mail and checking on the home of an elderly friend who was hospitalized when he was apparently ambushed. He was killed for his wallet and the friend's van he was driving. His body was found Aug. 18.

Elderly couple survives carbon monoxide poisoning

TYLER, TX (KLTV) – An East Texas woman is credited with saving her parent's lives after carbon monoxide seeped into their home for nearly a day.
The gas started filling the home on Gardner Drive in Palestine, after the couple returned home from a burger run and left the car running in the garage.
Doctors say Betty Fritz and her husband Bill are making a miraculous recovery.
For nearly 24 hours, carbon monoxide seeped into the couple's home.
"I was bewildered. I didn't know what happened, like a nightmare or a bad dream or something, but the Lord isn't finished with me yet. I have a lot of grandchildren and great children," said Betty.
On Wednesday, the couple's daughter, Carol Hutson, had plans to visit them; when no one came to the door, she let herself in, "He was sitting on the floor beside his bed. I said dad are you okay? And he just mumbled."
Hutson says she found her mother in the same condition.
"When I walked in, there was a very strong odor, and I couldn't place what it was," Hutson recalled.
Firefighters say the home was filled with 96% carbon monoxide. The couple was rushed to the hospital.
The couple's daughter says she won't leave their side until they make a full recovery. Betty says that's perfectly alright.
"We just went to bed like usual and we would have never woken up if she wouldn't have come over," expressed Betty.
Doctors say the couple could go home as soon as Saturday.

Elderly Sterling Heights man scammed out of nearly $8,000
By Norb Franz
Macomb Daily Staff Writer
A Sterling Heights senior citizen was scammed out of nearly $8,000 after receiving a phone call from a man posing as his grandson and claiming he needed money for bail, police said Thursday.
The victim, who resides on Ortman Drive in the area of Mound Road and M-59, told police that the caller on Wednesday morning stated to him that he was jailed in New York and needed $4,000 to be released.
The elderly man – Sterling Heights police refused to divulge his exact age – reported that the caller “sounded a bit like his grandson, however the caller was upset and coughing,” police said.
The senior citizen wired $4,000 via Western Union to Spain, as he was directed by the caller to do, police said. Approximately one hour later, the elderly man received a phone call from a person who claimed to be his “grandson’s” lawyer and requested more money to cover the additional costs.
Duped again, the victim sent almost $4,000 via Western Union, again to Spain, police said.

How do your elders view new technology that monitors their home life?
by Carol Bradley Bursack, Editor-in-Chief
During my busiest elder care years, I convinced several of my elders to wear personal medial alarms. With personal medical alarms, the person wearing the alarm is in control. If there’s a fall or other emergency, the person pushes a button on the bracelet or necklace style alarm, and help is summoned. Once they agreed to wear the devices, my elders did feel more peace of mind.

Customer Testimonial: CO Detector Saves Lives
“Thank you for saving my life. Saturday night at 9:30 I was watching TV and feeling drowsy with a headache. The alarm went off, and you called to say the carbon monoxide levels were high. You then called the fire department and they came to get me. The next day we found out the chimney was plugged. Thank you for being there.”
